  •  MMSTC Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit Participants

You MUST read the calendar below. If you and your partner can meet ALL of the time requirements then you and your partner may register for the fair. Students that agree to this time line and fail to follow through will have to reimburse the school for $15.00 entry fee for your project.

How to Enter

DO NOT Date Any of the forms without seeing me first.

Step 1: Each Team Will Need to Complete:
  1. Checklist for Adult Sponsor (1)                                                                                                                                                           
  2. Student Checklist (1A) and  Research Plan​
  3. Approval Form (1B)                                                                                                                                                                                        These forms will stay with you and you will bring them to the fair.  * Mrs. Hilliard needs a copy of all online entry  forms and confirmations. 
  4. ​ Category Selection                                                                                                                                                              *Who will be the most qualified to judge my project? What area of expertise is the most important for the judge to have? (For example, a medical background or an engineering background?)                                                                                                        *What is the emphasis of my project? What characteristic of my project is the most innovative, unique or important? (For example, is it the application in medicine or the engineering of the machine? Is it inserting the proper gene or the method of computer mapping to demonstrate the results?)​

Step 3: Do you need additional forms?
Additional forms may be needed if your research was conducted off site, with hazardous substances, biological agents, animals, or humans. When you enter you will see an SRC violation on the entry form. See me immediately and we will get you the correct forms. Consult the ISEF rules guide (below) when complementing these forms 
Use the  ISEF Rules Wizard as a first step to see what forms and per-authorizations are required for your project.

*If you have SRC forms Please bring a hard copy of all forms to Mrs. Hilliard. Hard copies must be mailed to the S&E office by Dec 1.

​Common SRC Forms 
  • Research Institutional/Industrial Setting (1C)                                                                                                                                     This form must be completed AFTER experimentation by the adult supervising the student research conducted in a regulated research institution, industrial setting or any work site other than home, school or field.
  • Qualified Scientist (2)                                                                                                                                                                                             May be required for research involving human subjects, vertebrate animals, potentially hazardous biological agents, and DEA-controlled substances. Must be completed and signed before the start of student experimentation.

  • Risk Assessment (3)                                                                                                                                                                            Required for projects using hazardous chemicals, activities or devices and microorganisms exempt from pre-approval. Must be completed before experimentation.
  • Human Subject Informed Consent                                                                                                                                                   An informed consent/assent/permission form should be developed in consultation with the Adult Sponsor, Designated Supervisor or Qualified Scientist. This form is used to provide information to the research participant (or parent/guardian) and to document written informed consent, minor assent, and/or parental permission. • When written documentation is required, the researcher keeps the original, signed form. • Students may use this sample form or may copy ALL elements of it into a new document. Please see a sample template for how to fill out each form. Pay extra attention to the dates you use. If you require a form that is not listed below see me. Your science teacher should only have to sign. It is up to you to complete the email, phone, and address portions. All ISEF Forms can be found at https://www.sefmd.org/ --> general info --> forms
